The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies nearly half of the nation's blood; teaches lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization — not a government agency — and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
Last year, the Greater Rochester Chapter provided temporary housing, food, clothing and support to 377 families after 233 fires and other disasters. We installed 2014 free smoke alarms in homes as part of our Home Fire Campaign to reduce the number of fire-related deaths and injuries nationwide by 25% in five years. Over 21,000 people were educated in lifesaving CPR/AED/First Aid and other preparedness programs. We collected over 30,000 blood donations and opened 352 cases to support our military members, veterans and their families.
