are professional musicians, music teachers, music college students, and also musicians whose main occupation is in other fields. The ensemble performs both as a full chamber orchestra of around 40 players and in smaller groups.
Cordancia has collaborated with several local performing artists and organizations such as the Eastman Chorale, Madrigalia, Vox Lumine, NYS Ballet, Meryton Assembly Dancers, BIODANCE, comedians Kerry Young and Abby DeVuyst and has featured a number of guest soloists. In accordance with the mission of providing extraordinary experiences of music to the Rochester audiences, Cordancia has featured performers of instruments that traditionally are heard infrequently in symphonic settings. These include: banjo, bagpipe, saxphone, Harding fiddle and dulcimer.
Cordancia was formed in 2009 by violinist Pia Liptak and oboist Kathleen Suher who met as members of the University of Rochester Symphony Orchestra; Kathleen as the principal oboist and Pia as the concertmaster. Cordancia became a not-for-profit in 2011.
In 2016, Cordancia was awarded 2nd place in the prestigious national competition, The American Prize, for the orchestra’s programming.
CONCERTO COMPETITION FOR YOUNG PERFORMERS
Cordancia has held four Concerto Competitions for Young Performers, sponsored by the Toscano family in memory of Nico Toscano. Two young musicians - one high school level and one college level student (ages 16-22) - received the opportunity to perform solo in concert with Cordancia and a cash prize.
Cordancia's educational outreach quintet offers programs at schools in the Rochester area. The programs "Timeless Tales" feature fairy tales retold in words and music. Cordancia's educational outreach group consists of 5 musicians and a story teller. The outreach group has collaborated with storyteller Jay Stetzer, songwriter Doug Waterman, and actress Judy Molner.
Cordancia's seasons generally include 6-8 concerts, educational outreach workshops, and season celebration performances.
WORDS FROM MUSICIANS AND AUDIENCES
"Cordancia presents innovative, unusual, and ambitious repertoire that should be heard more frequently. They collaborate actively with many other Rochester ensembles and make it possible for large-scale collaborative projects to succeed."
"In a short time, Cordancia has quickly become one of the most professionally organized and musically diverse chamber orchestras in the Rochester area. Communication and planning are among the strengths of the ensemble under Pia Liptak and Kathleen Suher's direction. Cordancia's seasons rival any of the better known chamber music series in Rochester."
"Cordancia is the happiest, most currently relevant ensemble I have experienced in Rochester - made up of Rochesterians!"
