David and Ilene Flaum Eye Institute

The Flaum Eye Institute at the University of Rochester Medical Center is the only comprehensive eye institute in Upstate New York. FEI offers the most advanced management of serious eye disease, is engaged in vision research aimed at improving lives, trains tomorrow’s eye care specialists and vision scientists, and is committed to promoting vision wellness at all levels throughout the region. With more than 50 physicians and researchers, FEI pioneers new therapies to help preserve and restore vision. Many of FEI’s doctors and investigators have been recognized by leading clinical and scientific organizations like Best Doctors in America, US News, Research to Prevent Blindness, and the National Institutes for Health. Flaum Eye Institute doctors offer the most comprehensive care for everything from glasses to macular degeneration therapy to cataract surgery. They also provide specialized services for people with rare diseases—drawing patients locally and from around the globe—who seek better vision where there was limited hope before. Researchers at FEI strive to make basic scientific discoveries about the eye and translate knowledge into new therapies and tools to treat and detect disease. Scientist Krystel Huxlin, Ph.D., has invented technology that has restored vision in patients who were blinded by strokes. Jesse Schallek, Ph.D., is developing non-invasive eye scanning technology that could help diagnose diabetes at its earliest stages, thereby helping ophthalmologists and physicians from other disciplines improve patient outcomes. This talented group also trains the next generation of ophthalmologists and vision scientists. Many of these students, residents and fellows have gone on to make significant contributions in the fight against eye disease, here at FEI and other institutions around the world. Together, the entire FEI team of faculty, students and staff is dedicated to improving the lives of thousands of our region’s most underserved people. This is achieved through performing community service, education and screenings, including FEI’s signature Glasses for Kids program, which provides vision exams and free eye glasses to children.
