Exploring Program-Seneca Waterways Council BSA

Exploring is a unique career exploration program for young men and women between the ages of 14 (completed 8th grade) through 20. Exploring units, called Posts, usually have a focus on a single career field, such as police, fire/rescue, health, law, aviation, engineering, or the like, and may be sponsored by a government or business entity. Exploring provides students with an opportunity to learn about a wide variety of career fields and network with professionals already working in those fields. They receive hands-on experience to determine whether or not a particular career field is right for them. They develop valuable networking contacts with professionals working in many career fields as they get to know other teenagers and young adults sharing your same interests and aspirations. Exploring can be the first step in identifying career possibilities while having fun in an exciting and informal environment. Exploring is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth and the organizations in their communities. Local community organizations initiate an Explorer post by matching their people and program resources to the interests of young people in the community. The result is a program of activities that helps youth pursue their special interests, grow, and develop. Exploring programs are based on five areas of emphasis: career opportunities, life skills, service learning, character education, and leadership experience. Through the Exploring Program, youth gain practical knowledge of and experience in a career so that they truly understand all that is involved in being successful in that career such as the education required. Young Explorers receive career mentorship and opportunities to take on leadership roles.
