Harbor House of Rochester is a hospital hospitality house. We provide temporary, affordable housing to adult family members who have traveled to Rochester because a loved one is receiving care in one of our area hospitals for a serious medical condition such as heart, liver, kidney failure or traumatic injury (to name a few). The stay in the hospital can be weeks or even months. It is a frightening, uncertain time. It also is financially draining.
We have provided over 8,000 nights of rest to families from all over NY, the United States and even six different countries! Our house has all the comforts of home
When these people first arrive, many are not certain that their loved one will be leaving the hospital alive. They have traveled to a place where they don't know their way, frequently don't even have a vehicle with them and have no friends or family in the area. We give these folks a comfortable place to rest and recharge, but more importantly, we give them support, friendship and a caring atmosphere at a very difficult and frightening time in their lives.
Here are some excerpts from our Harbor House Journal that the guests have written in regarding their time at the house: "...I was in a strange city and alone. The Harbor House was truly a safe harbor for me, both as a place to stay and as an emotional refuge. Everything was clean and perfect."..."Thank you for all you have done for me. You made a painful time so much easier. I thank all of you who took timeout of your day to be with me when I had no one else." "...This is truly a home away from home, exuding cheer, comfort, caring and concern for each of the residents while here and after."
We rely heavily on volunteers to staff and maintain our house. We do not receive any government assistance or funding from the hospitals. We depend on the kindness of people like you. Please consider helping us to continue our very important mission by making a donation today. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
