Tucked away in the basement of Mary Cariola Center’s Elmwood Campus sits a magical place filled with plywood, hardwood, metal, clear plastic, tools, and innovation waiting to happen. It’s the Cariola Adaptive Workshop. Most staff and visitors never hear the whirl of a jig saw, the pound of a hammer, the retracting tape measure, or the hum of a sewing machine. The specialized work in the Adaptive Workshop can easily go unnoticed…yet once you see these completed projects utilized by our students, you would be AMAZED. Some examples include:
• A platform for a toddler’s chair so a preschooler can safely sit and engage during circle time
• A touch release catapult so students can shoot basketballs in Adapted Physical Education class
• A special design and build of an exercise ball mounted on a wheelbase with back support to improve student attention and stimulation in the classroom
• Boxes of repaired sensory items and switching devices that operate toys, light boxes, and voice activation units
For over 40 years, the Workshop Team has created, built, adapted, and repaired thousands of items that can be found in almost every Mary Cariola classroom. Students of all shapes and sizes with different abilities require equipment of all shapes, sizes, and materials. Our Adaptive Workshop fills those needs. From practical solutions like installing curtain systems for classroom privacy areas to designing supine standers used for physical therapy, our workshop builds items that don’t exist. And when they do exist, they often need to be adapted, and what is broken is usually repaired. The Workshop does it all.
Our ROC the Day efforts will raise funds in support of our unique but unfunded Adaptive Workshop. Be a ruler and measure up to our lofty goal of raising $25,000. You know the drill. DONATE NOW!

Thanks to our longtime friends at Cobblestone Capital Advisors, they will make a $100 contribution for each of our first 25 donations to ROC the Day, no matter the amount. That's a total of $2,500 to support our unfunded Adaptive Workshop!
