It's so important for children who are deaf to be in a school where they are taught in their own language, where they can interact with peers in their own language, and where they can have immediate access to the world through the medium of their own language. Of course the language we're talking about is American Sign Language and the school: Rochester School for the Deaf (RSD). Deaf and hard-of-hearing children, from newborns through age 21, from 36 different school districts in Western NY call RSD their home. Your generous gift will help provide direct assistance to them, offering them the benefit from a full array of academic, athletic and social programs on our campus and in the community.
Approximately 55% of RSD's children are from low-income families, and more than 50% have secondary or tertiary disabilities in addition to hearing loss. Your ROC the Day gift helps them by providing American Sign Language (ASL) classes for their siblings and parents; in-home mentoring (Shared Reading Project) that helps hearing parents read bedtime stories in ASL to their deaf toddlers; support for educational field trips and career exploration activities; special equipment that addresses students' unique learning challenges; and a variety of other program enhancements that help them achieve their goals.
Please know that we welcome you to tour our campus, meet RSD students and staff, and learn firsthand how your gifts to our school can make a difference in the life of a child. To arrange a visit simply contact us at 585-544-1240 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Also, check out our Website to learn more about our school and the unique role it plays in the Rochester community.
Also, please know that your contribution to RSD can be given in lieu of a holiday or birthday gift to a loved one (we will send an acknowledgment letter to him or her telling of your thoughtful gift), can be directed toward a special need at the school, or can be given to provide support "wherever it is needed the most."
Thank you for supporting RSD and the wonderful students who benefit from our school's unique, direct-communication learning environment.
