Every day, thousands of Rochesterians turn to Strong Memorial Hospital for lifesaving medical care. Plus, as the largest and most comprehensive hospital in the region, we attract patients from throughout upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania. That's because, as a teaching and research hospital, Strong's patients benefit sooner from breakthrough treatments not yet available in most other health care settings.
What's more, our research has changed the world; we've helped to virtually eradicate the most common form of childhood bacterial meningitis, cut the number of life-threatening pneumonias, and reduce the worldwide prevalence of a viral infection that can cause cervical cancer. We're also building tomorrow's medical workforce. Nearly half of the doctors who train here go on to practice medicine in our region, providing a reliable supply of physicians for the future.
Our specialists treat the regional's most medically vulnerable patients “tiny, premature babies, patients who need blood, marrow or organ transplants, those fighting Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders, or victims of traumatic injury" offering a level of care that is only available at Strong Memorial Hospital. We've built unparalleled programs in adult and pediatric neuromedicine, urology, kidney disease, gynecology, neonatology, and pediatric orthopaedics that have earned the University of Rochester Medical Center a spot in US News & World Report's list of the Best Hospitals in America. Our focus on patient safety and quality care has helped us capture the National Research Corporation's Consumer Choice Award for each of the last 16 years.
We believe firmly in the power of prevention. Our Center for Community Health and Prevention is home to numerous programs that help area residents build healthy lifestyles or manage chronic conditions. Through the Center, Strong partners with organizations like the YMCA, local churches, and the City and County government to bring free public health screenings and programs that foster physical activity and healthful eating to our community. Many of these programs are geared for those who may lack the knowledge or the means to participate in preventive efforts. To us, the best medicine should be equally available to all, regardless of ability to pay.
In that spirit, Strong serves more underprivileged patients than any other local hospital, forming a vital community safety net for those who otherwise may not have access to health care. Your contributions to Strong Memorial Hospital help provide equipment and facilities improvements, as well as special financial support for underserved patients. Your gift is a priceless vote for a healthy community.
