The Dove Block Project

The Dove Block Project is a community arts center in historic downtown Geneva inspired by the creativity and originality of the renowned Geneva artist Arthur Dove, devoted to fostering the arts in the Finger Lakes Region through exciting and innovative exhibitions, events, and programs, which are free and open to all members of the community. As a thriving arts center, The Dove enhances the quality of life in Geneva and is an essential element in the vibrancy of the Finger Lakes region. The arts center contributes significantly to the excitement of living, working, and visiting the city and the area. The arts center in downtown Geneva benefits local businesses for residents and visitors. Geneva is central to tourism in the Finger Lakes. Visitors to the region enjoy its natural beauties, wineries, distilleries, restaurants, and other attractions. The Dove is a hub for promoting community arts in the area. Arthur Dove grew up in Geneva, returned in the 1930s, and while in residence created many seminal works. The Dove creates a center honoring his life and work and that of his wife, the artist Helen Torr, in Geneva. By adding Geneva to the map showing New York City, the Hudson River, the Catskills, Ogdensburg, and Buffalo, a trajectory of major arts across the state of New York is completed. Artists who were born or lived in New York were pioneers in developing or advancing major artistic movements and have achieved worldwide recognition. The Dove serves at least 30 rural communities including Canandaigua, Geneva, Seneca Falls, Waterloo, Penn Yan, Victor, Newark, Lyons, and Auburn. The Finger Lakes region is home to over 1.2 million people (6.1% of the State’s population), mostly concentrated in Rochester and its suburbs. The 70 public school districts of the Finger Lakes Region educated 175,810 students in the 2014-15 school year. In 2020, Geneva had a population of 12,443, an average household income of $59,778 and a poverty rate of 18.30%. The racial composition of Geneva is 75.6% White, 10.32% Black, 5.06% other race, 4.5% two or more races, 3.66% Asian, and 0.85% Native American.
