Wood Library

Among Wood Library’s core values is to make information and services accessible to all and contribute positively to our community. We are excited to introduce a new initiative that will make fresh produce, cut flowers, and starter plants available to library patrons and our neighbors free of charge. With your support, Wood Library will construct a Little Free Farm Stand on library property that will feature items donated by community members from their personal gardens. Our ROCtheDay fundraising goal is $2,000 which will help us purchase the materials necessary to build a movable farm stand (6’ tall by 5’ wide and 26” deep). The farm stand will be located next to the library building at its parking lot entrance from May 1 to October 31. The idea is to invite community members to donate extra fresh produce and plants from their gardens to share with others. The farm stand will be maintained by library staff and volunteers. Wood Library is located on Canandaigua’s N Main St, in a bustling neighborhood. Neighbors include two subsidized senior residences and a day care center. A community food pantry, a local health clinic, and clothing and voucher room are all located next door. In addition, The Gleaners Kitchen, which operates out of the Episcopal Church and serves a daily healthy lunch, free of charge, to those in need, is just down the street. Many of the people who reside in the senior residences next door rely on public transportation or others to get around town. The closest grocery store is Tops Friendly Markets, which is 1.2 miles away. A local Farmers Market is open on Saturdays in Downtown Canandaigua but there is no public transportation on the weekends. This makes access to fresh produce difficult for our neighbors, especially. The Little Free Farm Stand concept is not a novel one; in fact, one was started in Geneva, NY a few years ago, and it is modeled after Little Free Libraries that are in many neighborhoods across the country. Wood Library’s Little Free Farm Stand will help to address food insecurity in the neighborhood, introduce more healthful food to anyone who wants to try it, reduce food waste in local gardens, and promote generosity and kindness.
