Writers & Books

MISSION Writers & Books promotes reading and writing as lifelong activities for people of all ages and backgrounds to enrich their lives and the intellectual, social, and cultural vibrancy of their communities. VALUES We believe in the power and importance of the written word; in celebrating the written word as a tool for communication and an art form; that storytelling is a vital aspect of the human experience that unites humanity; that reading builds empathy and brings people together; and in creating a safe space for voices of all backgrounds, beliefs, origins, and abilities. VISION To be a leading resource that celebrates diverse voices and fosters thriving communities of readers and writers. Writers & Books is one of the oldest and largest community-based literary arts centers in the nation and the only one of its kind in the eight-county Greater Rochester area. Incorporated as a 501-c-3 nonprofit in 1981, Writers & Books has engaged youth and adults with the literary arts through workshops, readings, and presentations. Today, Writers & Books delivers a robust calendar of free and scholarship supported public programming, including Rochester Reads, a community-wide one-book initiative; SummerWrite, a reading and writing camp annually serving 600 youth K-12; a visiting authors reading series; year-round writing workshops; book clubs; and quiet writing spaces. Writers & Books operates Ampersand Books, an independent bookstore, at its Neighborhood of the Arts head- quarters, and also owns and operates Gell: A Finger Lakes Creative Retreat, a 24-acre site in Naples, NY.
