YMCA of Greater Rochester

The Rochester Aquatic Academy for Teens program not only educates Rochester teens in water safety but also gives them the opportunity to become involved in the community, with a goal of providing a fun and exciting environment that encourages teens to use their new skills to set a foundation for job opportunities in aquatics (including at the YMCA!) and make a difference in the community. The Junior Lifeguard Program is a program that runs throughout the school year. During this time Jr. Guards will be required to attend a weekly training meeting once a week and occasionally twice a week. Jr. Guards will be broken up into groups based on their swim skills. Each group will be getting certified in CPR and First Aid. They will also be assisting our instructors with swim lessons and our lifeguards during public swim. During this time Jr. Guards will: • Understand the techniques and duties of a lifeguard and swim instructor • Understand the responsibilities and expectations of a lifeguard • Understand and able to recognize a medical emergency both in and out of the water • Able to perform first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) • Assist in lifeguarding • Aid instructors during swim lessons • Work with other Jr. Guards, lifeguards, swim instructors, lead lifeguards, and children • Complete the First Aid and CPR skills in and out of the water • Gain professional and life skills, such as scheduling, time management, organization and member services
